Taking the time to make up a carpet cleaning kit can avoid stains from permanently settling on your carpet. It can also help to extend the lifespan of the carpet. Being prepared with a kit which you can pull out of the cupboard when a spill occurs is a great idea, and most of the items you can buy very inexpensively, or will already have in your home. Take a look at how to put together a carpet cleaning kit which can be used to tackle all kinds of stains.

Items

There are two areas of the kit; items which you use to clean up the spill, and solutions you apply to the carpet to help loosen the stain. For the items, you should have in your kit the following:

  • a soft topped toothbrush that allows you to access the deeper areas of the carpet
  • non-fragrance baby wipes, can can be used for a multitude of spills and stains
  • clean paper towels as well as small squares of clean cloth to help you blot up stains
  • a soft bristled hand-brush for stubborn stains.

Collect and place these items in a box, and put the following cleaners into the box as well.

Cleaners

Baking Soda—This is great for removing odors from a stain such as a urine or vomit stain. Not only will the baking soda neutralize the molecules which form the odor, it will also loosen the stain so it can be removed much easier. Simply pour over some baking soda, dab the area with a paper towel, and allow to work the stain for a few hours. Then, simply vacuum the area clean.

Salt—This substance can be effective for removing ketchup and red wine stains from your carpet. For ketchup, simply blot away any excess fluid from the stain site, sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the stain, and wait for about fifteen minutes before vacuuming the area.

For red wine, is it better if you catch the spill immediately. You can pour a little white wine over the red wine stain, to weaken the color. Then blot with a clean cloth, sprinkle some salt over the stain, and vacuum up after waiting for fifteen minutes.

Shaving Foam—For greasy stains, using some shaving foam is a great way to loosen the base of the spill, allowing you to remove it completely. Apply a little shaving cream to the spill, and blot the area, the grease should lift right up with the foam.

Other natural cleaners include vinegar, borax, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide.

Cleaning a water fountain

Our office building has a beautiful water fountain at the front of our lobby. Most people throw coins in there to make a wish, but some people can't resist the urge to throw other things like bottle caps in there. When rubbish gets thrown in there it can clog up the mechanism, and it's also just an eyesore if it's dirty in an area that is the first thing that most people see when they come into the building. We have a cleaning service that comes in to clean the water fountain and keep it looking spectacular all of the time.
